How to calculate hours worked

For each working day, subtract the start time from the finish time, then deduct unpaid breaks. The weekly total is the sum of the net daily minutes. Untick a day to leave it out. Use 24-hour times: 09:00 means 9 am and 17:30 means 5:30 pm.

Example: 09:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes elapsed. Deduct a 30-minute unpaid lunch for 8 net hours. Five identical days total 40 hours. For 09:00 to 17:15 with the same lunch, the result is 7 hours 45 minutes, or 7.75 decimal hours.

Overnight shifts and unpaid breaks

For a shift from 22:00 to 06:00, select Next day. Eight elapsed hours minus a 30-minute unpaid break equals 7 hours 30 minutes. Next day is explicit so a mistyped finish time does not silently become a night shift. A shift cannot exceed 24 hours.

Enter only breaks you want deducted. Paid rest time stays in the net total if you do not deduct it. This is arithmetic for planning and checking time records; it does not determine pay, overtime eligibility or legally required breaks. Follow the policy that applies to your work.

Minutes versus decimal hours

Divide total minutes by 60 for decimal hours. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.50 hours, and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours. The calculator adds whole minutes first, then rounds only the displayed decimal result to two places. The CSV includes net minutes so you can retain the exact arithmetic.

These are clock-time differences without dates or time zones. Shifts spanning a daylight-saving change may have a different actual duration. For a broader view, try the annual and lifetime work-hours calculator. To put rest into the day you have planned, use the break schedule calculator.

Work-hours calculator questions

Are lunch breaks included in working hours?

You decide what to deduct. Put unpaid lunch and other unpaid breaks in the Unpaid break field. Leave paid breaks out of that deduction. The tool does not decide your employer's rules.

Can I use this for a night shift?

Yes. Select Next day when the finish is on the following date. Equal start and finish times with Next day selected represent 24 elapsed hours.

Is my timesheet stored?

No. Inputs remain in this page's memory and reset when it is reloaded. Copy a summary or download a CSV if you want to keep your result. The site only uses optional analytics after consent; tool inputs are not analytics parameters.
