How this Pomodoro timer works
- Pick one small, concrete task before starting. “Draft the introduction” is easier to begin than “finish the project.”
- Run a 25-minute focus session. Pause for interruptions when needed.
- Press Start break when the focus countdown finishes. Step away for five minutes.
- Repeat. After the fourth completed focus session, the timer offers a 20-minute long break. You can change that length before starting a new timer.
What fits into four Pomodoros?
At the default settings, four focus sessions total 100 minutes of work. Three short breaks add 15 minutes before the fourth session ends. The following 20-minute long break brings the complete cycle to 135 minutes. Time spent paused or waiting to start a phase adds to elapsed time.
This tool measures completed countdowns, not task quality or productivity. A skipped focus phase does not increase the count. After a long break, the next set of four starts naturally; reset clears the session count.
Adjust the method to the work
25/5 is a useful starting structure, not a proven best interval for everyone. Shorter blocks may help with getting started; a longer writing or coding task may fit the custom work/rest timer better. The schedule calculator maps these intervals onto a whole day with lunch.
See study-break ideas for what to do away from the task, and Pomodoro timers versus break enforcers if you keep skipping the rest phase. The HSE's screen-work guidance supports frequent breaks and changes of activity; it does not prescribe the Pomodoro method.
Pomodoro timer questions
Can I change 25 and 5 minutes?
Yes. Reset the timer, change the focus, short-break and long-break lengths, and start again. Settings are disabled during a session so they cannot silently change the countdown.
Does it start the next session for me?
No. Each phase waits for you to start it. This prevents a background tab from recording cycles you did not actually follow.
Will I hear the timer with the tab in the background?
Optional sound depends on browser audio settings, device volume and whether the tab is suspended. Keep it open. A closed tab or sleeping device cannot provide a reliable alert.
