Why ordinary reminders stop working
A notification works the first week. Then something predictable happens: dismissing it becomes motor memory. You click it away before the sentence has finished rendering, and afterwards you genuinely cannot remember whether you saw it. The reminder has not failed to fire — it has stopped being information.
This is why "just be more disciplined" is bad advice for the specific problem of not stopping. Discipline is a resource you are lowest on at exactly the moment the break is due: four hours in, mid-problem, close to something. An enforced break relocates the decision to when you were rested — the moment you chose the setting — instead of asking a depleted version of you to make it again every ninety minutes.

What "unskippable" actually requires
Most apps advertising "forced breaks" close one or two of the escape routes below. A break is only as strict as its weakest one.
- Every monitor, simultaneously. The single most common gap. If the overlay covers only the primary display, your second screen is a fully working computer.
- Always on top, including over full-screen apps. An overlay another window can cover is a suggestion.
- Alt+F4 and window-close swallowed. The reflex arrives before the thought does.
- Follows virtual desktops. On Windows, Ctrl+Win+→ is a one-keystroke escape from any overlay that lives on a single desktop.
- Settings locked during and between breaks. If you can open preferences and change the break length to zero, enforcement is decorative.
- Survives restart, sleep and crash. Rebooting to skip a break is a real behaviour. Session state has to be on disk, not in memory.
- Idle time counted honestly. Strictness is only tolerable if the timer is fair — see how the activity-based timer works.

Three levels of "no"
Enforcement should be a dial, not a switch. Too strict on day one and you uninstall it; too soft and you are back to clicking away notifications.

Two design details make the middle level more useful than it looks. First, someone else can set the password. A partner, friend or colleague typing it in turns a decision you'd make while tired into one you cannot make alone — the same trick that makes commitment devices work. Second, every early unlock is logged locally with the time, the mode and how much break was left, so the honest record of how often you bail is not stored in your memory, where it will be edited.

Test any break app in five minutes
Use this on StopBurnout and on anything you are comparing it against. Set the work interval to two minutes and the break to one, then try to get back to work:
- When the break starts, press Alt+F4. Does the overlay close?
- Move the mouse to your second monitor. Is it covered too?
- Press Ctrl+Win+→ for a new virtual desktop. Does the break follow?
- Open Task Manager. Can you end the process without a password?
- Open the app's settings mid-break and try to set the break length to zero.
- Reboot the machine mid-break. Does it resume, or has the session been forgiven?

Steps 2, 3 and 6 are where most apps in this category fall down. Step 7 is where the strict ones become unbearable to live with, which is a different kind of failure and the reason we count real input instead of wall-clock time.

Several good tools offer some form of forced break, and for many people a free one is the right answer. The honest summary as of August 2026:
- Workrave — free and open source, oriented around RSI. Highly configurable micro-pauses, rest breaks and a daily limit. Dated interface, but the strictness is real.
- Stretchly — free, open source, cross-platform, and deliberately gentle. Breaks are skippable by default; strictness is not the point of the product.
- Sane Break — has an explicit force-break mode, but documents that you can exit force break and then postpone from the tray.
- EyeLeo and Big Stretch Reminder — both can be configured to block the desktop and disallow skipping, aimed primarily at eye strain and stretch prompts.

Common questions
Can I force Windows to make me take a break?
Yes. Apps in this category cover the screen with an always-on-top overlay when a break is due. How hard that break is to escape varies a lot: some show a skip button, some hide the skip behind a password, and some refuse to end the break early at all. What stops me from just closing the app?
In the locked modes the overlay swallows Alt+F4, stays above other windows, follows you across virtual desktops and covers every connected monitor, so there is no free desktop to escape to. Settings sit behind the same password, so you cannot quietly shorten the break instead.
What if there is a genuine emergency during a break?
Choose your protection level accordingly. Level 1 blocks nothing. Level 2 shows an unlock link thirty seconds in and ends the break with your password. Level 3 will not end a running break at all — pick it only when an unplanned few minutes away from the screen is genuinely acceptable. You can change levels between breaks.
Why does a password help if I know the password?
Because you can give it away. Letting someone else set it turns a decision you'd make while tired into one you cannot make alone. Even when you keep it, the extra step plus the local unlock log makes bailing a deliberate act rather than a reflex.
Does it work with multiple monitors?
